Executive Summary Students in Bishop Middle School's Academy of Technology and Gifted Studies, as part of Dr. Doherty's Life Science class, are using Alachua County's geospatial web application GeoGM, developed at the Department of Growth Management, to support a unit of their curriculum. They are using GeoGM to explore environmental planning and problem solving in their own community. Students identified land-units, roads, landmarks, conservation areas and environmental features such as wetlands, sinkholes, and parks. They explored housing density and census data, compared areas using buffers and considered future land-use projections. The goalof this unit is to expose students to availability of public GIS databases and resources as research tools and information and to educate them on the role of technology and Geographic Information Systems in planning and management.
Background GIS staff at the Growth Management Department have been working closely with Dr. Doherty to develop this unit and has supported his classroom effort. This is only the beginning of a pioneering effort, that could formalize at a larger scale with the Alachua County School Board.
