Consider the appointment of seven members to the Historical Commission.

Recommendation
Appoint seven members to Citizen-at-Large positions: three to terms ending April 2011, one to a partial term ending September 2009; one to a partial term ending January 2009, then a full term ending January 2012, and one to a partial term ending April 2010. Appoint one citizen to Alternate, partial term ending April 2010.

Currently there are seven vacancies on the Alachua County Historical Commission: six citizen-at-large vacancies, and one alternate position vacancy. Seven citizens have applied.

Background
The Alachua County Historical Commission provides leadership in identifying, preserving and interpreting the County's history and historic sites. Citizen-at-large (choose six): 1) Patricia Allshouse 2) Melanie Barr (completed 8 terms, attendance satisfactory) 3) Jon Carroll 4) David Dry 5) Carl Rose (completed 3 terms, attendance satisfactory) 6) Andrew Saltman 7) Florence VanArnam Alternate (Choose one from those not selected above): 1) Patricia Allshouse 2) Melanie Barr (completed 8 terms, attendance satisfactory) 3) Jon Carroll 4) David Dry 5) Carl Rose (completed 3 terms, attendance satisfactory) 6) Andrew Saltman 7) Florence VanArnam

Issues
From BoCC Rules of Procedure: “Members appointed to advisory boards and committees should generally serve a maximum of two (2) terms. The Board of County Commissioners may make exceptions to this general policy on a case-by-case basis (1) when no person applies for a vacant position; (2) when necessary to preserve the stability of a board or committee; (3) when necessary to retain a particular appointee because of his or her special knowledge and expertise; or (4) for such other reasons or circumstances as the Board deems appropriate….”
