Pollution Prevention Mission

To protect the soils, groundwater, surface water and air resources of Alachua County from pollution caused by hazardous materials and petroleum discharges. We carry out our mission through inspection and enforcement, contamination remediation and remediation oversight, hazardous materials collection and pollution prevention education.

Pollution Prevention Services

Petroleum Management -- Petroleum Clean-up Contract

  • Alachua County managed program for the clean-up of petroleum product contamination in soils and groundwater from old tank sites such as gasoline stations; performed and funded by a contract with the State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection.    

Petroleum Management -- State Tanks Compliance Contract

  • Prevention of petroleum product discharges from underground and above ground fuel tanks through a program of inspection, compliance and enforcement assistance at over 300 State regulated storage tank facilities in Alachua County.  Funded and performed under contract with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. 

Hazardous Waste Collection -- Hazardous Waste Collection Center for Households and Businesses

  • Provides for the reuse, recycling, and disposal of household and small business hazardous wastes and promotes pollution prevention education and initiatives in Alachua County.

Hazardous Materials Management

  • Regulates the use, storage and management of hazardous materials at regulated facilities and businesses through application of the Alachua County Hazardous Materials Management Code and the Florida Hazardous Waste Small Quantity Generator Program
  • Service includes hazardous materials complaint response, emergency discharge response and pollution prevention education activities.

  • Information about air quality in Alachua County and the County's efforts in the area of Greenhouse Gas reduction.

Cabot Koppers Superfund Site Information

  • Information about the status and activities associated with the USEPA managed Superfund Clean-up of the Cabot-Koppers Superfund Site
